Peter Coulson Natural-Light Workshop

New York City · September 2025

In September 2025, I attended a Peter Coulson workshop in New York City focused on finding and shaping natural light on location. The workshop emphasized recognizing flattering light, using architecture and surrounding surfaces as natural reflectors, communicating clearly with models, and creating polished photographs with minimal retouching.

Takeaways:

  • Selecting the location

  • Working with Natural Light

  • See and modify light

  • Using Natural reflectors - Buildings, walkways, etc.

  • Working with Models on Location

  • Taking photos that do not need any retouching or adjustments

  • The do’s & don’t when working with models

  • Talking to models and communicating during a shoot

  • Learning how to use light so you don’t need Photoshop to make your image pop

  • Find where light meets shadow.
